I am a big fan of the Eye-Fi card, and have had my 2GB SD version (i.e. photos, no video) for two and a half years. However, I rarely if ever used the old Eye-Fi Manager software, and over the last few months I’ve been without Eye-Fi wireless transfers altogether thanks to a PC migration, and general laziness on my part. Then last week I got a notice from the company that they’re discontinuing the old Eye-Fi Manager, and replacing it with new Eye-Fi Center software. The shift finally prompted me to set up Eye-Fi on the new computer and give the updated management portal a try.

The Eye-Fi Center has a clean, simple interface showing thumbnails of recently uploaded photos at the top, a list of connected devices along with a calendar to the left, a photo tray for sharing pics at the bottom, and a big preview screen taking up most of the display. There’s also a settings menu available with tabs for network selection, photo storage options, notifications, geotagging, and photo transfer preferences.

Stuff I Like:

The online photo sharing options are fabulous, particularly with the Selective Share feature, and easy to use with the Eye-Fi Center. The software supports a huge range of photo services including the basics like Facebook and Flickr, but also store-based services like Costco and Ritzpix, and blogging services like Movable Type and TypePad. (No WordPress, oddly) I was able to upload a test photo to my Snapfish account in seconds flat, and if I want, I can make Snapfish uploads automatic whenever I wirelessly sync my Eye-Fi card.

I also like the preview pane in the Eye-Fi Center, and the ability open a larger view of any photo in a floating window. More importantly, I like the fact that the Eye-Fi Center doesn’t disguise where my photos are actually stored the way the old Flip Video software used to. I can use the Center interface to view photos if I want to, but it’s not required.

Quibbles:

There are a few annoying bits about the new software. For example, the settings window isn’t optimized for my small-screen netbook, making it difficult to access the Save and Cancel buttons at the bottom of the display. But I discovered it is possible to drag the pop-up menu up just high enough to click on those buttons when needed. I also don’t like that there’s no status bar when I’m uploading photos from my Eye-Fi card. It might be less irritating if the card uploaded pics in chronological order, but it doesn’t. So I can see pics coming in, but have no idea how many are left to upload at any given time.

Dave found the interface a bit sluggish on OS X. It moved pretty quickly for me on Windows once all the uploads were complete, but there was lag time during photo transfer.

Bottom Line:

The Eye-Fi Center has potential. The sharing function is easily its best feature today, but you can see how new capabilities might be added in the future. (In fact, there’s a beta mobile version of the Center available, which I’m planning to check out next.) I also give Eye-Fi high marks for not locking users in with its management software. I plan to continue using the Center going forward, but if it’s not your cup of tea, feel free to stick with files-and-folders management, or anything else. Eye-Fi lets you choose.

p2pnet view Movies:- Japan’s NEC says it’s come up with a new technology “capable of accurately detecting the illegal copies of video contents or their altered versions uploaded to the internet in just a few seconds”.

Apparently “it can manage to do so by generating a compact signature or fingerprint of 76 bytes of size per frame of the original content and comparing them with the video content on the internet”, says Akihabara News.

“That means, for instance, any screener or camcorder movie copies will be detected by either the producers or service providers fast and easy”, says the story.

According to NEC, “the technology succeeded %96 of detection rate with low false alarm rate of 5ppm (5 in one million) during the tests conducted by international standardization organization (ISO)”, says the story, adding:

“And the technology is already accepted as part of the MPEG-7 standard.”

The auld grey heads who run the corporate entertainment cartels will be having wet dreams.

But maybe not.

Many, if not most, screeners, working copies and other closely held materials end up online only after they’ve been posted there by Hollywood insiders.

Hmmmm. Could be tricky.

Meanwhile, the full release is below >>>

Tokyo, May 7, 2010 – NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of a video content identification technology that detects illegal copies of video content uploaded to the Internet in a matter of seconds.

This technology generates a fingerprint (video signature) to identify video content then compares video signatures to the signatures of original content in order to detect copies or altered versions. Therefore, altered video content, such as caption overlays, camera captured copies and analog copies, can be quickly and accurately detected.

This new technology enables content holders and service providers to automatically detect illegal copies and prevent illegal upload of video content on the Internet by registering original video content. These developments are expected to significantly reduce the time and cost of manual content inspections as well as improve the scale and accuracy of content assessment.

This technology has been approved by the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 (*1) as the MPEG-7 Video signature tool (*2), international standard for video identification.

These video content identification technologies feature the following:

Accurate detection of copied or altered video content
Video signatures are extracted for each frame based on differences in the luminance between sets of sub-regions on a frame that are defined by a variety of locations, sizes, and shapes. Video signatures represent a unique fingerprint that can be individually detected frame by frame. This technology is capable of accurately detecting video content with that was created with such editing operations as analog capturing (*3), re-encoding (*4) and caption overlay (*5), which was conventionally very difficult to detect.

A high detection rate and low false positive rate for all video contents
By estimating confidence of signatures generated from each frame and using the confidence for sequence identification, the technology achieves a high detection rate (*6) with a very low false positive rate (*7). These technologies achieved an average detection rate of 96% at a very low false alarm rate of 5ppm (5 in one million) through tests conducted by the international standardization organization.

Detection of short video scenes
Due to the high identification capability of signatures, the technology is capable of accurately detecting video scenes as short as 2 seconds (60 frames), which was formerly impossible when using conventional methods.

Compatibility with home PCs
By designing a compact signature size of 76 bytes per frame, the storage memory required for the matching process is minimized. As a result, a home-class PC (*8) can match approximately 1,000 hours of video in 1 second.
Due to the proliferation of video distribution services on the Internet, the detection and deletion of illegally distributed and copied video content (copyright infringement) has become a crucial issue for content holders and service providers. This problem has conventionally been addressed by manual inspection which is incapable of accurately tracking the constantly growing volume of Internet content. In order to solve this issue, various automatic detection tools have been proposed, such as digital watermarks where content is embedded with special code, and the use of image retrieval technology. However, it was prohibitively difficult to accurately inspect large databases, short content or video produced through various editing operations. These new technologies resolve each of the above issues.

Looking forward, NEC will further develop this technology in order to provide a variety of applications that establish a content distribution structure where all video rights are respected.

This technology was approved as the Final Draft of International Standard of ISO/IEC 15938-3/Amd.4 at the 92nd ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 WG11 (MPEG) meeting held in Dresden, Germany from April 19 to 23, 2010. The standard is expected to be published in September 2010, following approval from ITTF member countries.

This newly developed technology will be demonstrated at the 13th Embedded System Expo at Tokyo Bigsite between May 12 and 14.

Stay tuned.

“Sorry to be a stickler but Lambics are not region specific. They are not covered by that kind of law (PDO or PGI).”

If you write articles, own a blog or a website, or even a newsletter you'll probably find yourself eventually looking for free stock images, visuals or photos. Some blog owners and writers use images that are copyrighted, which can get you in trouble and even, in extreme cases, cause a lawsuit to be filed against you - which you obviously don't want to happen. So if you do need free stock images, visuals or photographs for your online work, where should you go online to get them? Try these sources for free stock images, visuals and photographs and your articles, blog, website or newsletter will look even better.

FreeStockPhotos.com - You can use photos from this website for free for both personal and commercial use. You just have to make sure you list the photographer's name, and put the name of the website, FreeStockPhotos.com near the photograph you've used. And, of course, you can't sell the photograph to somebody else. Their categories of pictures are a bit limited but they have a good selection of photos and stock images in categories such as Animals, Christian, Egypt, Israel, Near East, Plants, Rome, Scenery and Sky.

Wikimedia Commons - At Wikimedia Commons, you can get free images and pictures, sound files and even some multimedia files for free use. All of the content is either in the public domain or released under a GNU Free Documentation License, and they have millions of images available in hundreds of thousands of categories. I've used photographs of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, cities in England, flowers, cups of coffee, garden gnomes, flags, food and a lot more subjects. I particularly like the photos that are taken by government employees as they are all usually in the public domain, and are of subjects you may not have access to otherwise. All you have to do is make sure you put the name of the photographer, videographer or picture creator near the file you choose to use, and mention what license it's been released under.

SXC - SXC has over 393,000 photographs available for use. They also have a great selection of tutorials on things like Coloring a Drawing, Getting Flawless Skin on Photos, How to Colorize a Black and White Image, and Making Reflections. They also have photos and images in a few hundred categories from continents to cities, animals to architecture, medical to computers. They have standard restrictions, which you can read at the bottom of every photo or image available, as well as photos from photographers who want more restrictions to be applied to their photos. Overall, I think the quality of photos is better on Wikimedia Commons, but SXC does have some unusual photos, so check both sources before you decide.

FreePhotos.com - You can use any of the more than 1,600 photos available on FreePhotos.com as long as you credit the photographer and do a link back to the website. They have photos in categories such as Asia, Fast Food, Motorcycles, Cameras, Musical Instruments, Animals, Sports and even Artistic and Texture. You do have to sign up for a membership to be able to download or upload, but it's a free membership.

PhotoRogue.com - PhotoRogue is really cool because, if you want a photograph but can't find it, you can make a request and a photographer might just go out and get it for you. You can be quite specific too. There are currently 94 albums with almost 700 photographs requested by people. Some of the requests include photographs of the coffee shop in the Elliot Bay Book Co, because it was supposedly used for the coffee shop on Frasier, and comparisons between milk moustaches and Guinness moustaches.

These are just five of the many websites out there where you can get free stock photo images and visuals for use on blogs, articles, newsletters and more. Check out these sources and if, by any chance, you can't find what you're looking for, do a web search for free photos. There's lots of stuff out there. Just make sure you read the requirements for downloading and credit the photographer and website where necessary.
