I am a big fan of the Eye-Fi card, and have had my 2GB SD version (i.e. photos, no video) for two and a half years. However, I rarely if ever used the old Eye-Fi Manager software, and over the last few months I’ve been without Eye-Fi wireless transfers altogether thanks to a PC migration, and general laziness on my part. Then last week I got a notice from the company that they’re discontinuing the old Eye-Fi Manager, and replacing it with new Eye-Fi Center software. The shift finally prompted me to set up Eye-Fi on the new computer and give the updated management portal a try.
The Eye-Fi Center has a clean, simple interface showing thumbnails of recently uploaded photos at the top, a list of connected devices along with a calendar to the left, a photo tray for sharing pics at the bottom, and a big preview screen taking up most of the display. There’s also a settings menu available with tabs for network selection, photo storage options, notifications, geotagging, and photo transfer preferences.
Stuff I Like:
The online photo sharing options are fabulous, particularly with the Selective Share feature, and easy to use with the Eye-Fi Center. The software supports a huge range of photo services including the basics like Facebook and Flickr, but also store-based services like Costco and Ritzpix, and blogging services like Movable Type and TypePad. (No WordPress, oddly) I was able to upload a test photo to my Snapfish account in seconds flat, and if I want, I can make Snapfish uploads automatic whenever I wirelessly sync my Eye-Fi card.
I also like the preview pane in the Eye-Fi Center, and the ability open a larger view of any photo in a floating window. More importantly, I like the fact that the Eye-Fi Center doesn’t disguise where my photos are actually stored the way the old Flip Video software used to. I can use the Center interface to view photos if I want to, but it’s not required.
Quibbles:
There are a few annoying bits about the new software. For example, the settings window isn’t optimized for my small-screen netbook, making it difficult to access the Save and Cancel buttons at the bottom of the display. But I discovered it is possible to drag the pop-up menu up just high enough to click on those buttons when needed. I also don’t like that there’s no status bar when I’m uploading photos from my Eye-Fi card. It might be less irritating if the card uploaded pics in chronological order, but it doesn’t. So I can see pics coming in, but have no idea how many are left to upload at any given time.
Dave found the interface a bit sluggish on OS X. It moved pretty quickly for me on Windows once all the uploads were complete, but there was lag time during photo transfer.
Bottom Line:
The Eye-Fi Center has potential. The sharing function is easily its best feature today, but you can see how new capabilities might be added in the future. (In fact, there’s a beta mobile version of the Center available, which I’m planning to check out next.) I also give Eye-Fi high marks for not locking users in with its management software. I plan to continue using the Center going forward, but if it’s not your cup of tea, feel free to stick with files-and-folders management, or anything else. Eye-Fi lets you choose.

From working with the cast since Season 2, Frank has developed a bond with the actors and creative directors. His images are a crucial element to the series, representing the first visual cues seen by the public. In short, his photos need to be as dynamic as the show itself.
What was it like, shooting the Season 4 promos?
This year, being the whole new start, the fresh start, it was the empty office. Before anyone had been into it — I think they'd done one full week of shooting beforehand — we went in and took Jon's or Donald Draper's office apart and it was the first time anyone had been in. So they had just finished building this beautiful set two weeks prior and we walked in and put a lighter carpet on the floor and basically recreated the shot. We had to take a couple of that walls out just to get that shot. That's how much commitment the crew has to the show to get that right.
What else goes into creating each one of these shots?
On the day we do the publicity, which is kind of great also, it's great to know the characters because you can set them in a situation, shoot them, and walk away. We actually spent no longer then 15 to 20 minutes shooting each of those publicity pictures. And they're designed and thought out prior — “Jon is sat down in a chair, there is a woman leaning over him bringing him a drink, there is a crowded bar behind him.” We'll shoot that and then move right on to the next one. We don't do 26 variations of that. There is the moment that they are looking for and we'll work until we capture that.
Jon and the actors will change little details as we're shooting, but what they're changing isn't the background, or he's moving or switching left to right, but he's making simple changes like having a drink in his hand or a cigarette lit or bringing the cigarette to his mouth. A lot of planning does go into these though. We'll sit and discuss the types of photography of the era and and what type of photography would make the most sense. Last season was an Avedon-type group shot. This season was an Irving Penn-esque shot of the cast. It's like having another Christmas once a year, when I get to walk in with the full cast and play.

Simulating the arid, rocky terrain explorers might encounter on future space missions to planets and moons, from July 26 to August 8, 2010, the NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group (IRG) is conducting robotic field test at the Haughton Crater on Devon Island in the Canadian Arctic. Scientists are putting robotics to the test, partnering with NASA to assess concepts for future remote planetary exploration as part of the Haughton-Mars Project, or HMP-2010.
“Explorers, such as geologists, often find themselves with a set of observations they would have liked to make, or samples they would have liked to take, if only they had been able to stay longer at a site,” said Terry Fong, director of the Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. “Our work this year is to study how remotely operated robots, perhaps even vehicles previously used for crew transport, can be used to perform follow-up work.”
Site surveys can involve tedious and repetitive tasks, and by using teleoperated robots for follow-up activities, NASA is hoping to pull more useful information from their missions.
The potential challenges of remote research are great. From communication and transportation logistics to weather and instrument efficiency, space work is a desolate environment, and the Canadian arctic puts NASA engineers to the test.

I guess that God did make “Adam & Steve” after all. I heard a priest on the local San Diego News this morning claiming that approving gay marriage was going to somehow promote bigamy??? I somehow missed that on the gay agenda. I really need to try to attend the meetings more often. Another lady explained that she had nothing against gay people getting married but she hoped that they would be discreet in public. She was concerned that by witnessing same sex couples kissing, hugging or holding hands that her grand-daughter would somehow be denied a write to choice??? Huh? If nothing else it would show her that there is no shame in homosexuality. So hug your friends and hold hands in public! And be sure to kiss on the lips in front of as many people as possible.
Yevgenia Chirikova, a civil rights activist and leader of the Khimki forest park defenders has been detained, infox.ru reported . More than 30 policemen came to detain her after she gave a press-conference in the Independent Press-Center.
Let’s see. On the one hand, the scanners are a useful tool in detecting the sort of explosives smuggled onto Flight 253 by Abdulmutallab, and therefore a valuable weapon in the war on terror. Which of course is why Napolitano is expanding their use. On the other hand, airline passengers are understandably self-conscious about dangling their goods in front of the local TSA screener but perhaps willing to do so in the interest of not being blown up in mid-air. Our dilemma: What can we do to freak out the public to the point where they’ll demand that the scanners no longer be used, thereby imperiling everyone?
Good ol’ DHS. Always quick with a solution.
The U.S. Marshals Service admitted this week that it had surreptitiously saved tens of thousands of images recorded with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint of a single Florida courthouse.
This follows an earlier disclosure (PDF) by the TSA that it requires all airport body scanners it purchases to be able to store and transmit images for “testing, training, and evaluation purposes.” The agency says, however, that those capabilities are not normally activated when the devices are installed at airports…
William Bordley, an associate general counsel with the Marshals Service, acknowledged in the letter that “approximately 35,314 images…have been stored on the Brijot Gen2 machine” used in the Orlando, Fla. federal courthouse. In addition, Bordley wrote, a Millivision machine was tested in the Washington, D.C. federal courthouse but it was sent back to the manufacturer, which now apparently possesses the image database…
A 70-page document (PDF) showing the TSA’s procurement specifications, classified as “sensitive security information,” says that in some modes the scanner must “allow exporting of image data in real time” and provide a mechanism for “high-speed transfer of image data” over the network. (It also says that image filters will “protect the identity, modesty, and privacy of the passenger.”)
The only reason I can think of to save the images is to preserve evidence in case the TSA screener on duty … utterly fails to detect the hidden explosives in the image and the suspect somehow makes it onto the plane. Is that what this is about — making sure prosecutors have something to show the jury in case some jihadi actually makes it past the checkpoint and is subdued during the flight? Obviously you don’t need the image if you nab the guy during the pre-flight screening since you’ll recover the actual explosives themselves. What the sam hill is going on here?
Update: Speak of the devil…
Update: To clarify, obviously you don’t need the images if the guy’s subdued during the flight either. But having them would prove whether he brought the explosives onboard himself versus whether they were planted there by some other party. Is that what this is about? It can’t be.

Customer Review: I love this computer!
I do a variety of freelance video and photo work. This laptop has the RAM and hard drive space to make it great for productions and editing on the go. The firewire port is especially useful for hooking up a camcorder and recording directly to the laptop, or for transferring DV tapes from the camcorder to digital format. The webcam and built in microphone are good for video-conferencing and impromptu video-blogging. This computer is a great deal for the multi-media oriented buyer!

I was photographing in the last days - please tell me what you think:
When friends and guests first enter your home, what is the first room they see? Most likely it's a foyer or front entryway. Making your foyer friendly and inviting will give your guests a pleasant welcome, and be a refreshing room for your to enter when returning home. Since foyers are generally a small area, it is best to keep your decorations to one theme. My personal favorite is to decorate the foyer in your home with personal family photos.
Types of Foyers
If your foyer has several doorways, or windows, try decorating the space with small, slender tables, topped with a variety of family photos.
If your foyer has at least one wall that is wider than the doorways, try making a photo collage arrangement on that wall. Then, accent that main wall with a small arrangement of photos on the other smaller spaces between doorways.
What Photos Do I Choose?
When selecting the photos to put on display, you have several options.
You could choose to decorate your foyer with all candid photos of family, friends and children being active. This would be a great time to display babies destroying birthday cakes, dad showing off the big catch or your puppy playfully discovering the backyard.
Or, you could opt for all the professional family portraits that you have gathered over the years. People love to stop and gaze at how people have changed through the years, and we all have spare school pictures in a drawer somewhere! This is also a great opportunity to display those old photographs of great-great grandparents.
If you have a lot of photographs, you may want to make a seasonal display. How fun is it to look back at old Christmas pictures while the holiday is approaching? As we anticipate Spring, fill your foyer with pictures of bright flowers and lush landscapes. If you're planning a birthday party, fill your foyer with pictures of the birthday person!
If you have just been on a vacation, show off the highlights of your trip by decorating your foyer with enlargements of your vacation photos. Sunsets, scenery, landscapes and candid moments will allow you to re-live the trip each time you enter your home.
Another fun way to decorate your foyer with family photographs is to have your favorite photos reprinted in black and white or sepia brown-tone, and just display monochromatic photographs!
If you have a home photo printer and some basic photo editing software on your computer, you can easily reprint your favorite digital photographs in black and white or sepia brown-tone. Most photo editing programs have a one button option for these fun features.
What Type of Picture Frames Should I Use?
When decorating your foyer, plan to use frames that will accentuate your wall color and floor covering. When in doubt, wooden frames that accent furniture that is visible nearby will look great. Solid black frames are always classic, and match most decor, too. If you choose to go with a holiday theme, you may want to choose decorative frames that accentuate the holiday season.
No matter what theme, frame or design style you choose for your foyer, you will surely be welcomed each time you step into your home and see warm inviting memories staring back at you.
Sometimes, the sheer size of something overwhelms you, the point in question – Facebook. What started off as a social networking website, Facebook now has more photos on it than any other dedicated photo sharing website!
Digest this – Everyday 2-3 Terabytes of photos are being uploaded, with each month adding about three billion photos! This is how flabbergasting and enormously huge this is! Facebook is no Photobucket, Flickr or Picasa web album. Still this has resulted in users flocking to the website to share photos with friends. According to comScore, Facebook is growing at three times the speed of top photo websites. Talking about India, Facebook gets about 18 million users per month, compared to 1.91 million users on Flickr and 1.61 million users on Picasa. It is not customary to compare a social networking site and a photo sharing site, but this has become unavoidable in this case.
This trend can be summarized in one word – ’sharing’. On dedicated photo sharing websites, you post your pics in an album and share the link with your friends. You post this link on your social networking sites too. But why use two different platforms, when the social networking sites allow you to post photos? This is precisely the reason why users have started uploading pics on facebook. This is an extension of the exhibitionist behaviour wanting to share the pics with everyone. The comments and likes on the album lead to instant gratification of the user. Most of the albums that you see on facebook are about trips and parties that you may have attended, that is, people centric. The ability to tag your friends is an added benefit.
Other photo sharing websites have recognized this trend and they now allow users to share their pics on their wall with the click of a button. Also, they are trying to drive home the fact that they are websites which host photos specifically and hence, give a lot more flexibility when it comes to uploading photos. Professional photographers prefer using Flickr over Facebook for the sole reason that the Flickr community is filled with people who appreciate photography. You can upload full resolution pictures on Flickr, which you cannot do on facebook. Most of the pictures are not people centric but good photographs that people share so as to get critical acclaim from other users. Also there are professional options like camera model and ISO number and copyright issues that Flickr takes care of. Also, if you want to share only some pics from your album and not let other users see the rest of your album, you can do just that.
The bottom line is that when you talk about pictures, Facebook is about people and Flickr is about photography. There always will be photo sharing websites for the sole reason that it creates an elite community of people who appreciate photography and not just pictures of them having a good time.
In India too, around 64 per cent of the people use facebook for its photo sharing feature and about 36 per cent access the video features. These figures show that Indians are also eager to showcase themselves on social media.
With the amount of data being uploaded on Facebook, it has become a data monster. What do you think about this trend? Is it time for you to upload another picture of yourself on facebook?

Supermodel Kate Moss really rocked out on Saturday night, taking the stage with boyfriend Jamie Hince, Nick Cave and Susie Bick for the Hoping Foundation. Moss rocked so hard in fact, that the tambourine she was playing split into two pieces. Now, that's how to rock. In the end, the event raised over $600,000 for Palestinian refugee children–including $7,500 for Kate's broken tambourine.

The addition of Mars imagery is one of several changes to the telescope that Microsoft is showing off Monday at its annual Faculty Summit meeting with outside researchers.

Need help getting your pictures transfer onto your new ipod Photo? The ipod Photo is a great gadget that I use all the time. Other than the obvious feature the ipod Photo offers of holding all of your music collection, it also stores your photos for easy access and sharing with friends no matter where you are. The 20 gig ipod Photo has the capacity to store 5000 songs or 20000 photos, or a combination of the two. The ipod Photo allows you to play slideshows of your pictures with music. I love having all my pictures with me to share with anyone at anytime.
Getting your pictures onto your ipod Photo is really a very easy process, and there are several options for you to choose from. If your camera is compatible, Apple makes a little gadget called the ipod camera connector. This device attaches your digital camera directly to your ipod for quick transfers. Check Apple.com to determine if your camera is compatible with the ipod camera connector. If your camera is not compatible there are other options to transfer your photos to your ipod Photo. You can save your photos directly onto your computer, make a file and title it ipod photos. Place all the photos that you want on your ipod in this file. Then, go and open the iTunes software and connect your ipod Photo to your computer using the USB cable. In the iTunes software, select the Edit tab in the top row, and scroll down to select Preferences. This will pop up another window where you will select the ipod tab from the top row. From here, select the Photo tab. In this window check the box next to Synchronize Photos From. You then have the option to choose a folder. Browse your computer until you locate your ipod photos file that you made earlier, select this file. Ensure the Copy All Photos button is selected. Select Okay at the bottom. You are now ready to place all of your photos on your ipod. If you do not own a digital camera then the easiest thing to do is try to get your pictures on a CD at the same time you get them developed. Then you can just place the CD in your computer and follow the steps above. Every time you update your ipod the software will look in the ipod photos folder that you created and transfer any new photos onto your ipod Photo.
Now that your ipod Photo has all of your pictures stored in it, you can take it with you and share your memories with your family and friends.

This installment includes indie-folk/alt-country band Phosphorescent, up-beat garage-pop group Electric Tickle Machine, French pop stars Phoenix, teen indie-punk siblings Tiny Masters of Today, fuzzy shoegazers Autodrone, manic indie-rock band ArpLine, dreamgazers ZAZA, and California indie-rock band CHIEF.
But, wait! There’s more! We also enjoyed the following fresh, hot bands: Seattle indie-rockers The Blakes, Australian atmosphere rock band The Temper Trap, Alec Ounsworth (frontman of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), New Zealand dance punk group Bang! Bang! Eche!, London electro-rockers The Big Pink, California garage rockers The Willowz, Boston rockers Dylan in the Movies, and London indie-pop group The Clientele.
Betty White sex photos?! Sounds like hooey, but who knows what this kinky minx was up to in her younger days. According to the gossip blog ZackTaylor.ca, “industry insiders” have been contacted about purchasing four photographs of 88-year-old White and her late husband, Allen Ludden, a television host, allegedly engaged in “sexual activities.” That could mean anything from a chaste peck on the lips to … well … anything Tila Tequila would do. The photos were allegedly found in a box of memorabilia left behind at the Golden Girl’s old house.
Oh, Betty! We would expect this from that hussy Rue McClanahan but not from you. [ZackTaylor.ca, Showbiz Spy]
I find this no different than the grilling/beating/accusations on the President. In a corporation this large (or government), the CEO/President cannot hope to know every detail of every last thing that takes place in the company. That is not his job. He relies on a qualified team and many of these questions can only be answered by the appropriate team members. Yes, he is the “head” so to speak, and he must accept the responsibility as part of that title, but in truth he is not really responsible. If you've ever been in management at any level you will have some idea of how this works. So it may be viscerally satisfying to beat up this remarkable cool guy (kinda like our Pres again) but it really accomplishes very little. Unless there is legislation to prevent this kind of malfeasance (and there was clearly malfeasance), this is merely a waste of time and money - and we know how good Congress is at that. BP will reward this man greatly for his grace in the face of this castigation, no doubt about it. It's the shareholders to whom he answers. It's a corporation. It doesn't really matter what is the corporations product but how well it performs financially. And some of these people really do look loony and ask really stupid questions. How in the hell can we expect any level of performance out of them? I find that as appalling as the “spill.”

Flowers add such spirit to the room or an outdoor setting. I have recently started collecting bud vases (some new, some created, some ‘turned-into vases’ from other existing items I already had). I love spreading them throughout the house… spreading this ‘spirit’ and beauty all about!

Awesome nice pictures from Viginia McDonald. She is really a talented photographer and know how to present interior decoration and design in a way of art.
And yes, I also agree with you about what you say about flowers. I do love flowers too and nothing adds more of a touch to a room than some flowers.
I even use dried flowers to decorate my rooms if no fresh flowers are on hand. It doesn’t even always have to be a bouquet of flowers, just one beautiful rose in a decorative vase will catch the eye and add charm to the room.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, you know how most mother’s would love to have a fantastic photographer photograph their children? Well my dream would be to have professional photographs of my home! These photos are beautiful!!!! As far as flowers, I couldn’t agree more, they are a must for me too! We recently moved to a new house and the house was a disaster but I still insisted on buying flowers so there was something that was pretty going on!!
