Photography projects also afford the photo blogger a chance to engage the local community and draw possible traffic to the blog.
Ideas for blogs can include:
- Documenting the local community (festivals, events, etc.), providing good experience for future photojournalists.
- A 365 photo project, where the photo blogger usually focuses on taking one unique and good photo per day. Photographer Jim Goldstein provides some excellent tips for succeeding at a 365-day projec t.
Engage Readers with Blog Contests
A component to successful blogging is engaging the audience. Hosting contests on the photographer's blog is a great way to do this. It allows blog followers to flex their creative vision while garnering the photo blog a more loyal following.
But what are contests without prizes? A photo blogger can get creative with this, whether with doing a profile on the winner, inviting the winner to do a guest post, or even prizes (a limited edition print or a useful book like John Harrington's Best Business Practices for Photographers).
Problogger.com founder Darren Rowse offers some suggestions for hosting successful contests in his blog article titled, “My Secret to Running Successful Competitions on a Blog.“
How to Display and Market Work on a Photo Blog
Photographers and photo enthusiasts often use their blogs to display their work, even if they have a primary website. It often reaches a different audience than a photographer's main website, adding an influx of new visitors.
But a photo blog also provides the photo blogger with a way to market herr photographs. A blogger set up an online photo store and integrate it into their blog. Services like SmugMug provide photo bloggers with the option of hosting and selling photos; photographers can also set their own prices.
These services do charge a fee, but they also allow a photographer a secure way to host her work. It is one of many useful tools that photo bloggers can utilize.
One example of integrating an online store is photographer and food blogger Kate Morgan Jackson's blog Framed.
Spreading the Word with E-mail Newsletters
E-mail newsletters are a very valuable resource for any blogger, especially those with a heavy subscriber base. Whether a photo blogger uses a service such as Aweber Communications or designs one independently, it allows the photo blogger to reach his/her audience and provide content that's not otherwise available on the blog.
Updates, tips and announcements are a just a few uses for an e-mail newsletter, as are additional updates to any monthly or weekly photo project. Popular photog community Phot.net utilizes this tool very effectively, sending out a monthly e-mail newsletter to its subscribers as well as occasional, shorter ones every few weeks.
Blogger Darren Rowse also utilizes an e-mail newsletter as part of his marketing strategy and provides a detailed account why.
Photo bloggers shouldn't take it as simply throwing something together and sending it out. Careful design and planning of quality content goes a long way, showing that the blogger respects her audience.
Whether photo bloggers are searching for new ways to improve their blogs or seeking inspiration for fresh content, these four suggestions provide a way to better utilize it. Fresh and interesting projects, interacting with the audience and marketing the photographer's work provides the blogger with some additional tools and possible methods of increasing her audience.

Richard, I thank you. Yes, there was a pattern. A pattern that you and others could NOT see nor know about.
Remember there were ‘two’ sides to the ‘argument.’ You had no way of seeing the emails I was getting from the Sheriffs supporters even AFTER I made peace.
For Instance, a man, who shall remain nameless as I don’t want to go back over things, but lets just say he lives in Virginia right outside Washington,D.C.
After I posted what I felt, was a nice little story about the “Indian” brothers, and then forgave the Sheriff, I was sent an email from this man who I KNOW is a friend of the Sheriff, it stated
“You truly are “Fuckn Nuts!”
So, as you have found by now, I am up to the challenge and on again I went.
Richard, I was not going to ‘Air’ threats to my life out in public…. Trust me, I have been long concerned for MONTHS to a point where one of my children who heard my wife and I talking about it, will no longer sleep in her own bedroom alone. She has moved to the living room..
Not to mention ‘other’ moves that have been made.
I came out NOW in Public about this, because I felt terrible for those people who may have been subject to the issues in Cals article. Mahon didnt comment on behalf of these people.
Mahon SEND SOMEBODY ELSE to tell Cal Skinner and MYSELF about this “Death Threat” situation… He didn’t even do it himself, he send his Campaign Manager (7) MONTHS AFTER the fact…..( although I had been receiving Death Treats via emails from “Police”….. and I wont reveal how I know this.. but I have them.
Was threat was very specific, that I would “Die by Fire!”
So, its not that all of a sudden I want to take a “Whack” at Mike Mahon…. Its the point that he seemingly waits until a “Political Opportunity” to put on the Cape!
We need a Sheriff with a “Cape” 24/7………….
Let me be further clear please. If I EVER heard anything regarding any safety issues that would affect Sheriff Nygren and or his family, I would also be first on his door step as well to tell him of what I knew.
As I’ve stated, there is much going on that I cannot go into. The chips may fall where they will.
Now, really, we need to move on and I will get to the crux of this situation. I have met it head on and sent a letter of request to meet with the Sheriff in person. Could it be that the Sheriff made a statement out of anger, sure, we all say things we don’t mean.
But the detail with which I have seen via emails and from what I have been told, there is in fact reason for me to have concern.
As far as my ‘Demanding” Mr. Mahon go to authorities… How can I make a man do anything? He is a law enforcement officer and in management in one of this nations largest police departments. You touch on the very point of my ‘rant’ Richard.
WHY DIDN”T HE? I think you have wisely answered your own question as to what “Set me off!”

Flickr has rolled out a new design for the photo page, after testing and tweaking it since June 23 with 800,000 users as testers.
The most striking difference is that the default picture is 28% larger than before. Other features include:
- A new lightbox, that allows you to click on a photo or use the magnifying glass icon to browse through large photos on a dark background.
- Always there navigation buttons to navigate between photos.
- Navigate between the photostream, groups, and sets via the upgraded film strip on the photo sidebar.
- A new widget-like grouping of the “story” of the photo, with location, tags, author, etc all in one easy to find place.
- Licensing set by the author will be more visible in the new design.
- Favoriting is now more visible next to comments.

Two months after announcing its development, Sony has launched the NEX-VG10E - an E-mount camcorder that becomes the worlds' first consumer-grade HD camcorder with interchangeable lenses. Although appearing under Sony's Handycam brand, rather than Alpha, it retains a lot in common with the Alpha NEX series. It features the same 14.6MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor but is capable of recording 1080i video at a higher, 24mbps, bitrate. The NEX-VG10E also features an electronic viewfinder and 'Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone' that uses four microphone elements to provide better channel separation and cancel unwanted noise. In every other respect it is essentially a NEX 5, featuring the same user interface (though with more external controls) and both SD and MemoryStick storage. It will sold as kit with image-stabilised E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens and will be available a suggested retail price of €2000 / $2000.
Although the VG-10 can shoot still images with the same level of control as the NEX-3 and 5, it cannot record RAW images.

The new NEX-VG10 is the world's first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor.
