It may have been the year I received my first Barbie Dream House for Christmas or perhaps it happened during my summer visits to my Grandmothers house and being in awe of her traditional yet chic décor or it may have been a combination of the both, nevertheless it happened, I caught the design bug. I remember how excited I was to receive my first Barbie Dream House; it was pink (one of my favorite colors) and had cute little plastic furniture in it that could be moved from room to room. Although I thought it was cute, I felt that it needed just a little something extra to really make the rooms come alive. I found myself making little curtains for the windows and covers for the sofa from my mothers discarded fabrics. After I finished decorating the Dream House, I would change it from time to time to coordinate with the Seasons, by decorating with light airy fabrics for the spring and summer and going for the more rich warm fabrics for the fall and winter.
This hobby grew into a fascination for me, so much so, that I began constructing houses out a shoe boxes or card board boxes and cutting out holes to make little windows and doors. It didn't stop there, when I was 18 and moved into my first apartment I had a ball shopping and decorating my home. I would change the décor around about every 6 months to try new looks and styles. I also tell my friends that when I become wealthy and earn my first billion, I'd like a home large enough where I can decorate each room to accommodate my many decorating styles. I would do French country in my kitchen; maybe a little New York loft contemporary in the living room and perhaps a mix of Tuscan meets old Hollywood glamour in my bedroom.
As time went on, I received so many accolades from my family and friends that I found myself rearranging and decorating their homes and before I knew it, it turned into a business. I know most people wait until spring to do their spring cleaning and update their décor, but I love this time of the year, so why not dress up winter with some style. Today, I am going to tell you how easy it is to change your living space without the use of paint or breaking the bank.
1.Add Pillows - Most people furnish their homes with neutral furniture pieces in shades of taupe, beige, mocha, olive, teal or white which makes it easy to change your look from spring to winter. Purchase pillows in your favorite color and arrange them throughout your living space to instantly change your look.
2. Enhance your Window Covering - Choose warm colors for your window coverings that compliment your existing décor while adding some winter warmth. If you have plantation blinds or roman shades installed in your windows, try adding some Tap Top wool drapes to update the look of your living space and help keep heat from going outdoors while keeping plenty of style indoors.
3. Purchase some New Artwork - Try and find artwork with a winter theme in warm colors that will look great with all the Christmas décor. Last winter I purchased prints with deep reds and framed them in mahogany frames and they looked fantastic with all of the holly, red bows and Christmas trees.
4. Purchase a New Carpet/Rug - Add a nice thick carpet to your living space that will allow your family and guest to walk around shoeless and still feel warm and cozy.
5. Change the Lamp Shade - You can drastically change the look of any room with the addition of lamps. Lamps come in many styles and sizes which makes it easy to find something that fits your own personal style. If you already have plenty of lamps in your home, you can simply switch out the shades to change the look of your décor for less than $20.00.
The great thing about preparing your home for the winter season this year is the fact that next year you don't have to run out and buy anything new because you've planned ahead. Remember to store your accessories away in a dry, heat controlled environment and you'll be able to use them for years to come.
Happy Shopping and I wish you and your family a Blessed Holiday Season!
